I was born in London to an Irish father and an English mum. I survived a Convent education.
Creativity and design played an important part in my life from early on. Despite the demands of a large and growing family, I started a company in the 1970s designing and manufacturing English craft products for the gift trade worldwide. This led on to retail design, fashion merchandise design and shop within shop operations.
Selling this business in the late 1980s led to me having more time available to develop my love of art and painting. I now have a small studio in our contemporary house in the Midlands and enjoy participating in local exhibitions. I have exhibited at the Barbican in London and have had work accepted for the Royal Academy summer exhibition and sold my work through galleries.
I continue to enjoy my garden, walking, poetry, cinema and the lives of my six children and nine grandchildren.
I am self-taught, eclectic and constantly evolving, following the journey on which each idea leads me. I am not exclusively engaged in abstract art, but this is where I get most satisfaction. In essence, I enjoy the struggle to resolve each composition.
Sometimes my work is a response to landscape in terms of line, form and light. But often there is no conscious thinking process, and no planning. One painting moves on to another taking its history with it.
I am more interested in shape and form than colour, I usually use no more than three colours plus white to ensure that all colours are complimentary. Texture too is so important to me, so I love to use mixed media and collage, particularly muslin for its frayed edges. Movement too is a central theme. My works must have movement, so I use circles, curves and line to this effect. Maybe set against panels and blocks, some tilted a little to convey their own movement. All this within the overall desire to create balance and composition. Did it succeed?
Judge for yourself.
